I didn’t image that it would go from starting to make noise yesterday to me sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow. I thought for sure I would last until the weekend so I could replace it then.

Eh, my car went from “acting a little weird” to “totally dead” in about 3 hours when my alternator died.
I was 3 hours from home, at a track day.

Heh, same thing happened to me a few years ago.
I was also about 3 hours from home, on the other side of the state. I was about an hour away from getting to my appointment, and saw the gauge drop and the warning light come on. So I turned off everything I could think of- lights, radio, HVAC...
I reached my destination, which was just across the street from a NAPA store. After my appointment, I was pleased to find that it still had enough power to start up so I could move it to the NAPA lot and swap the starter out. Easy job on a GM 3800.

Yeahhhhh. I wasn’t so lucky.
A friend gave me a ride to a parts store an hour away that claimed they had one and were holding it for me. We got there, they had no idea what was going on. I call one of the local stores and they claim they can get one in by the next morning. Same friend picks me up bright and early and we get the alternator. I had left the car behind with friends who were tearing into it (in paddock no less), so it would be ready to swap. Bolt the new one on just fine, but the plug is different. I look at the receipt, it’s for a fricken base model.
I’m ready to set the car on fire. I went and found my very first instructor who had sorta been keeping tabs on what was happening, and told him I just wanted to go home. 15 minutes later he had found someone going my direction with a trailer and a Z06 track car that still had plates. His son was also there with a BMW. My car went home in the trailer, the son drove the caged, gutted, loud and hot Z06 for 3 hours, and I drove the BMW.
Somehow, this is one of the least-worst bad times I’ve had a track day...
